Notices to all Nuvi 30, Nuvi 40 and Nuvi 50 owners. We have received the following alert from Garmin:

"We have discovered an issue with software version 2.50 on nüvi 30, 40 and 50 models that could potentially cause your device to not work properly. To correct this issues, please update the software on your device to version 2.60.

Sincerely,

Nuvi 40 had funky nav but worked generally for a couple of years. Then it started to have trouble to lock to satellites and finally would not at all. Well 2.5 years aint bad eh. So I got the successor, 42. Had trouble with satellites by end of first week, and after 2 weeks no satellite lock at all. Unable to get to maint window on either with 'turn on while touching lower left of screen'. Can the Sat Lock be fixed on a 40? It doesnt have any connect for my external powered antenna. THANKS

Yes, unfortunately the newer models do not have an external antenna port. Loss of reception is probably related to a defective receiver chip or possibly a transient diode that is placed across the internal antenna to protect the receiver chip from ESD (electro-static discharge). The diodes can only absorb so many "hits" before they short to ground. When that happens, reception may be intermittent or lost completely.
