SHARC VE Schedule

Summer schedule under planning - Please check back again
.
South Hills Amateur Radio Club, Inc. sponsors volunteer exams at least 4 times a year. The exams are held in Southpointe. Walk-ins are always welcomed.

Contact Club VE Liaison: Mark Phillips, N8UVQ. [ n8uvq@juno.com ] for more information.

When attending one of our exams, please remember to bring the following:

1. A legal photo ID (e.g. driver's license, passport, etc).

Note: If you do not have a photo ID, bring two other forms of identification:

  • State issued ID without a photo (some states still have them)
  • Birth certificate (must have appropriate certifying seal)
  • Social Security card
  • Library card
  • Utility bill, bank statement or other business correspondence that specifically names the person; or a postmarked
envelope addressed to the person at his or her current mailing address as it appears on the Form 605
  • Students/minors may bring any of the above items and/or a school ID, minor's work permit, report card, or a legal
guardian may present a photo ID.
  • Your Social Security Number (SSN) or your Federal Communication Commission (FCC) issued Federal Registration
Number (FRN). VEC's are required by the FCC to submit either your SSN or your FRN with your amateur radio
       license application form.

  • If you prefer not to give your SSN at the exam session, you must obtain a FRN from the FCC prior to taking the exam. Also, once you have the FRN, you may no longer use the SSN on the application.

To get a FRN, go to the FCC's website. Under Quick Links select Universal Licensing System (ULS), and next select New Users-Register to complete the electronic entries. Some VE Teams will only accept a valid FRN on your application. Check with the SHARC VEC prior coming to the exam session.

    2. If applicable, bring the original and a photo copy of your current Amateur Radio License, or the original(s) and photocopy(s) of any Certificates of Successful Completion of Examination (CSCE) you may hold from previous exam sessions. If your license has already been issued by the FCC, the CSCE showing license credit is not needed. The photocopy(s) will be sent to the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) with your documentation package.

    3. A calculator with the memory erased and formulas cleared is allowed while taking the exam. You may not bring any written notes or calculations into the exam session. Slide rules and logarithmic tables are acceptable, as long as they are free of notes and formulas. Cell phones must be silenced or turned off during the exam session and the phones' calculator function may not be used. In addition, iPhones, iPads, Androids, smartphones, Blackberrry devices, and all similar electronic devices with a calculator capability may NOT be used.

    4. Bring a check/money order (payable to ARRL VEC) or cash in the amount of $15.00 to cover the exam session fee. Once you pass, you will be given instructions to pay the FCC $35.00 using the CORES FRN System.

Our VE Testing Team will provide all pens, pencils, forms (including the NVEC 605), scratch paper, or a calculator if you need one.
