Update 5/17/2012: This problem may be caused by firmware version v5.3, which was released on February 29th, 2012.

Update 6/21/2012: Garmin has resolved these issues in release v5.4 on June 21st, 2012.

Garmin has pulled version 5.3 as of May 16th, 2012. We recommend not updating your unit until Garmin has released a corrected version and 7x0 owners have had a chance to fully test the firmware.

We believe that the changes in 5.3 have somehow affected the units memory resources, preventing it from operating correctly. We still recommend following the procedure below.

Original Article:

Does your Nuvi 7x0 seem to take forever to boot? Are you tired of looking at the "Loading Maps" screen?

Once your Nuvi boots, does it jump to different menus, lag when selecting a function, lock-up and not accept input from the touchscreen or shuts down and reboots?

You may be a victim who is suffering from a corrupted or overflowing trip log. This issue can be triggered especially if you just recently updated your map. The new map is larger and uses up more internal memory when loaded in at boot-up. Combine that with a full trip log and your asking for trouble.

Touchscreen failures are possible but a failed touchscreen will not cause a Nuvi to boot slowly or shut down.

So what is a trip log anyway? A trip log records every trip that you make and begins recording once your unit has established a satellite lock and once you begin moving.

The trip log records every route that you take, the time and travel speed. It keeps recording until it fills up the trip log memory and starts to overwrite prior recordings. That is how it is "supposed" to work. It is supposed to "archive" older files to your Nuvi's drive, provided that you have enough space left on your unit after a map update.

The trip log is read into the units memory at boot-up and if full or corrupted, it can severely slow down boot-up time and cause the unit to lock up intermittently.

Turning on the trip log viewer will allow you to see the previous trips you have taken. They will show up as blue lines (breadcrumbs) on the map screen.

How to turn on/off the trip log viewer:

1. At the main menu, press the wrench/tools icon.
2. Press the wrench icon.
3. Press the map icon.
4. Toggle the trip log button (hide or show).

If you select "show", you will see blue lines (breadcrumbs) showing where you have been on the map screen.

How to clear the trip log:

1. At the main menu, press the wrench/tools icon.
2. Press the down arrow in the lower far right corner.
3. Press the "My Data" icon
4. Press clear trip log.

You can NOT turn off the trip log. We would recommend clearing this out frequently to keep the unit running smoothly without lockup issues.

Clearing the trip log will also greatly speed up the green task bar progression when connecting your unit to a PC.

We also recommend clearing out the "Recently Found" folder as well.

Ok, so what do you do if your unit locks up before you can clear the trip log?

Well, you have to be fast and tap through the menus very fast to reach the clear trip log function.

It may take you several tries (it took me eight attempts) before you can do it but if you are quick, you'll get there.

Watch for the tumbling hour glass and notice how long it takes before the trip log to be cleared.

No doubt your trip log was full and it was starving your GPS of its memory resources.

Another tip: Clear your trip log before you upgrade to a new map.

Good Luck!
