I have read numerous posts regarding the non responsive touchscreen. I have not read any though where the problem was intermittent. I noticed the other day on my way back to work from lunch that the touchscreen became un-responsive. The vehicle was hot (Florida), but not as hot as it gets in the summer. The unit was not in the direct sun. I brought it into work and after a little while in the AC it worked fine. I tried it the next day to be sure I could re-create the problem and it was exactly the same. It didn't work after being in the hot truck for awhile, not in direct sun, but worked fine after being brought in the AC for awhile. Is this just another variation of the touchscreen issue that would be resolved with having the touchscreen replaced? The unit is 3 years old and I have never had an issue before. Thanks Andy

Hi Andy,

We've seen intermittent touchscreens all of the time. A customer will send us a unit that they claim has a non-responsive touchscreen but by the time it reachs us, it is working again. Regardless.... we replace it.

What is happening is, that the silver conductive ink surounding the borders of the touchscreen has fractured through heat. There is one type of touchscreen used in the 6xx series that is prone to this failure and there is one that is not.

With heat, the fracture expands, causing the touchscreen to no longer work. When it cools down, the connections connect again.

Think of it like the turn signal flasher on a car or christmas tree flasher. There is a closed connection when cool and the connection opens when hot.

The only correct way to correct this problem is to replace the touchscreen.

The screens that we use in our repairs do not have this problem.

OK. Thank You for the quick response. Yes it makes perfect sense. I suspected it was the same animal different color but I had not seen that described here so I was not sure. Since the unit is 3 years old and has the original battery in it, although it still seems to hold a charge, it would probably be prudent to change it now as well? I have also seen it mentioned about audio speaker issues and issues with on/off button. I have never had issues with either of those, so same question, would it be prudent to replace them as well? I am not made of money but if it makes sense to do it since it will be in the shop anyway then that is what I would do. Would upgrading the firmware also be performed? That is original as well. Yes ultimately I would like to get a quote. I believe I would just need to select that option on your page but like all places that have great reputations and do quality work there is a queue as is the case with you. You are booked up! I guess I will just have to keep checking to see when there is space in the queue. You have an EXCELLENT Web site as well. Cheers Andy

Hi Andy,

We're always busy but we can often work someone else into our schedule. I'll email you information on how to obtain a quote from us.

We recommend having the battery changed if the battery is over 2 years old but it is up to you. If it is charging ok and holding the charge then again, the choice is yours. We find that if the battery is not holding a charge it could be a sign that it is bloated, which can eventually crack the case open.

The power switch is another optional choice. If your power switch is OK, then our procedure would be preventative maintenance.

If you have updated your unit with the latest firmware & TTS voice updates, this will protect your speaker from being overdriven, causing possible burnout.
