Hi Ali, the only way to resolve this problem is to replace the touchscreen. I've seen many touchscreens that have failed even when there isn't any visable physical damage. Apparently, the manufacturer is using a different touchscreen vendor that has been having quality issues causing the touchscreens to fail prematurely. The touchscreens manufactured by the original vendor are very robust and only fail when the glass is broken. |

My nuvi 680 began acting up with respect to the touchscreen just after the warranty expired. Now it can not be re-calibrated nor do any of the alternative approaches offered on-line here and other places work. I am wondering if the cost of repair is worth it or buying a more current 765t is a better option? |

Only you can make that decision. However the cost for us to replace the touchscreen & glass would be $49.00 USD + $10.35 USD returns shipping. |

My Nuvi 680's touch screen stopped working. It will turn on and I can see the screen but cannot select anything. I have turned it off and on so many times hoping that it will start working.... I am so frustrated. I was going to send it to FL with my daughter next week since she will be there for 3 weeks with her sister. I am wondering how long it will be before Sharcnetusa will be accepting anymore units for repair. |

I posted elsewhere before seeing this forum, but I just wanted to say I got the big run around from Garmin today on my Nuvi 650, which also has this problem of a dead touchscreen. They denied the problem, and offered a refurb for $30. I refused, and wanted to talk to the supervisor. Basically didn't want the same problem down the road and was hoping there might be another option. Scott Dace and Kathy Vo, both supervisors, kept sending the poor rep back to the phone rather than talk to me. The rep finally told me I had to wait till tomorrow for a call back to speak to a supervisor. Pfft. So much for Garmin customer service. Will update you all tomorrow if there is a call-back. Am I being unreasonable here? I paid 300 for this unit and it's dead in less than two years. By the way I had to wait 30-40 before the rep even came on the line. |

Sharcnetusa-- Are there other frequent problems with the 650? Like anything that preemptively should be replaced if I get the touchscreen repair done? Thanks. |

Hi Dennis, We can send you a quote but we won't be able to beat $30. We use the original style touchscreens that are more robust. The speaker is known to fail and the power switch can break too. Batteries go bad after 2 years. We can address all of these issues and more. I don't care for refurbs because they sometimes have problems too. Some were even burnt inside. - Jim |

Like other posters, the touchscreen on my Nuvi 660 just stopped working one day. It's 2 1/4 years old and I only use it when out of town on business. I tried to use the backdoor method posted on your web site to recalibrate it, but no luck. I've been checking your web site over the past few weeks, but it appears the repair schedule is still full. Any sense when you might be able to provide service quotes and accept repairs? |

I, too, would like the touchscreen on my Nuvi 660 replaced. How long of a wait can I expect before you start accepting repair quotes again? |

Not intending to sound like a broken record, but my Nuvi 680 also has a dead touch screen. I attemtped to get a repair quote, but your site says you aren't accepting repairs at this time. I don't want to deal with the factory bubbas in Olathe, Kansas. Besides all the 'favorites', I have a lifetime map update, and activated the MSN Direct until they pull the plug on 1 Jan 2012. Please help! Thanks. |

Guys, great to hear you are so busy, but I cannot afford to wait until you are ready to take more repairs to get my Garmin 680 touch screen replaced. Is there any way that I can purchase a touch screen to do the repair myself? I have a fair amount of electronics training, so not worried about replacing it myself. I will also forgo any warranty. I just need to get this done since I am travelling a minimum of 4 days a week. |

Sorry but we can not provide any do-it-yourself information. Do-It-Yourself Repairs We can tell you however, that we receive emails each week from those who have irreversibly damaged their Nuvi just trying to change a battery. Replacing a touchscreen is much more complex than changing a battery. If you break the LCD flex cable latches in the process, it's "Game Over". The LCD itself is also susceptible to being cracked. In some cases, even we can't repair the damage that a customer has caused. We strongly recommend not attempting to do this yourself. We also use a certain type of touchscreen that we have proven does not become un-responsive over time, like the original touchscreen. The problem may return if the proper part isn't used. We have been replacing touchscreens for well over 3 years and have never had a repeat failure. We've literally replaced hundreds of them. Due to liability issues, we no longer sell parts. Yes, we are always busy but we can often squeeze someone into our schedule if asked nicely. (Message edited by admin on November 16, 2010) |

Great service! I am glad that I found your business. Long story-short, my Nuvi 660's touchscreen has become unresponsive. In my attempt to determine the nature of the problem and fix it, I came across a "help" blog that suggested to delete a file (name escapes me) while connected to PC and enter the calibration mode to reset the screen. Well, much to my dismay, I discovered that the screen was still unresponsive. Now I have an unresponsive screen AND a missing file... I would like to have this fixed and will patiently wait until you guys can take repairs. In the meantime, should I try to restore the software file or is this something that can be done when repairing the touch screen? Thanks for advice. |

Hi Troy, The file name that your deleted was GUPDATE.GCD. We provide a procedure here: http://www.sharc.net/discus/messages/6/77.html?1286154637 However, we recommend renaming the file rather than deleting it. The file is a firmware update file and not needed after the unit has been updated. It can come in handy if the firmware becomes corrupted. It will allow you to reflash the unit's firmware. We'll send you the information on how to send your unit to us for repair. |

Hello, I also have an unresponsive Nuvi 660 screen. May I have a repair quote? Editor's Note: The above was a bogus post made by Ronald L. Korzeniewski of Chicago, IL. (Message edited by admin on January 13, 2011) |

Hello, I have a Nuvi 680 and it's touch screen isn't responding either. The unit turns on, but doesn't respond when I try to navigate through the menus. Also I had recently just updated the maps and bought the traffic service =( Burning my money just letting it sit on my desk! Would I need to replace the screen? |

If you unit's serial number begins with a "12P", "14V", "143" or "13N" then I would suspect that you have a defective touchscreen. We can send you information on how to send it into us for repair if you like. |

"10R" is not the serial number. It's the number just above the bar code. I am betting it starts "12P", "14V", "143" or "13N". Sure we'll send you information. |

Jim, Thanks for setting up this webste - I have used your reset advice to keep my 650 somewhat functional over the last 6 months, but now the touchscreen is finally dead. I know that you have been really busy recently - I keep waiting for the order status to change, but you appear to be really backed up. Is there anyway you can let me know when you have an opening? I bought a lifetime map subsciption a couple months ago, and I'd hate to waste that money. menunes@hotmail.com |
