Hi, I am using a Rocketfish car charger for my nuvi 1390 and it shows the computer icon, as explained here.

http://www.sharc.net/gps_charger_repair.htm

I am using it because I am mounting it in my car and I prefer the straight usb plug to the elbow.

After about 30 seconds it goes to navigation mode so I guess it's not that big of a deal. I was wondering if it is safe for the unit and if there is a fix or if there is possibly another charger with a straight plug that will work properly. Thanks!

Hi Brendon,

No, it should not hurt your Nuvi. It just means the wiring/resistance value of the dc adapter is not exactly identical to the Garmin OEM model.

Just becareful if the window mount comes loose and it falls on the straight plug. Sometimes the impact can put excessive stress on the USB charging port of the Nuvi and break it loose from the board.

Have you tried looking on eBay? I know sometimes the decriptions and pictures of the plugs can be rather vague. Look for one with a straight plug and "Will not put Nuvi into data mode"

Thanks you are so right. There are a few sellers saying their's won't go into "pc mode".

And it won't fall on the plug, I have it mounted to the dash. I want the straight plug so it will go back into the dash out of sight.
