It worked good out of the box for about 30 minutes.
Then it beeped and the screen went black and blank.
When I restart it the word "garmin" appears for a few seconds and then it returns to black. Nothing, no sound, no images, nothing. I've tried using both the vehicle power cord and the 110v plug. Would a battery die even if it's plugged into a working power source?

The unit should power up with either the car adapter or AC wall charger, even with a dead battery. Have you tried restting the unit by pushing the on/off switch to the left and holding for at least 30 seconds?

Hi Ron,

A Nuvi should turn on and run off of an external power source even if the battery is dead. It will even turn on if the battery is disconnected. I've done it before, so I know this is true.

My question is, you say it still turns off even when plugged into the car adapter or AC adapter but do you really know if power is getting to the Nuvi?

The reason why I ask is because if you have a loose or broken mini-USB connector, then the Nuvi isn't going to get power, even though you have the cord plugged in and when you turn it on, your running soley on battery power and if the battery charge is low, it will shut off.

If your Nuvi could reach the main menu, you would be able to see the battery indicator. If you see the battery indicator, that would mean you are running on battery power. When a charger is plugged in, that indicator goes away, indicating that you are now running off of an external power source.

The problem is, that you can't get to the main menu because the unit shuts off.

From my experience with the 2xx/W series, the mini-USB connector becomes loose and breaks off of the board, preventing the external power from charging the battery. I've received many units from customers who thought they had a bad battery, when in fact the Mini-USB port was broken, preventing the battery from receiving power from the charger.

In my opinion, that's what I think is wrong with your unit and can be confirmed by observing the charging port connector with the unit open.

I have the same problem with my 265wt Nuvi. It does power on, but after the "loading maps" screen it just shuts off. If plugged into a power source via the mini-usb port, it will do the same thing, but instead of staying shut down, it'll reboot and loop over and over again. To me that means the mini-usb port IS working correctly since it loops. There must be some information in the GPS that errors or something to cause the shutdown.

So far I've tried doing a soft reset by holding the lower right hand corner of the screen while it's being powered on, but sometimes it seems to reset and sometimes it shuts off before I can get it to reset. Either way, it's still doing the same thing of looping to "loading maps" and shutting down.

Also, I've tried holding the power switch to the on position for 10-15 seconds to no avail since the unit will shut off before the time needed.

Any other suggestions for me?
