If your Nuvi has the problem that when you press one key but another key is highlighted, then either your touchscreen is defective or it is miscalibrated.

For example, pressing the letter "A" on the QWERTY keypad, actually highlights the letter "S" or "Q" or "Z". On the non-QWERTY keypad, this may show up as "B".

Method #1: If you can get to the main menu, press the "wrench/tools" icon and then the "Display" icon. Now press the calibrate screen button and go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Method # 2: Follow this procedure if you can't get to the main menu or any menu thereafter.

First, turn the unit OFF.

Nuvi 3xx & 6xx Series: Hold down the on/off power button and don't let go of it.

On the screen it will say "Pre-boot mode"..... keep holding the button down..... after some time you will eventually come to a screen with dots. If the screen says "Loading" and does not go to to the calibration screen with the dots, you will need to connect the Nuvi to a PC with a USB cable and rename the file "GUPDATE.GCD" within the Garmin directory to "GUPDATE.OLD". Once the file has been renamed, repeat the above procedure.

Once you reach the calibration screen, now you can let off of the on/off power button. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Nuvi 2xx/2xxW Series: Turn the Nuvi off. Place your finger on the upper left-hand corner of the screen and then slide the on/off power switch to the left and hold until you see the calibration screen. Note: Some 2xxW models require the procedure below for the 7xx.

Nuvi 7xx Series: Turn the Nuvi off. Touch the screen anywhere and keep your finger there while moving the on/off switch to left (don't wait for Garmin logo to come up) and then quickly moving the switch the right (lock position). After a short while, you will reach the calibration screen. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Nuvi 8xx Series: Turn the Nuvi off. Remove the battery from the Nuvi for at least 10 seconds. Press and hold your finger on screen, while putting the battery back in. The Nuvi will boot-up and you should see the text "Pre-boot Mode" appear on the screen. Continue pressing on the screen until pre-boot goes away and the progress bar appears. Now remove your finger. After a short while, you will reach the calibration screen. Go through the entire procedure of pressing each dot as it appears on the screen until it says "Done".

Nuvi 11xx, 12xx, 13xx, 14xx, 16xx, 24xx, 25xx Series: Turn off the Nuvi. Place your finger on the upper left-hand corner of the screen and then push down on the power button to turn the unit on. Release the power button when the Garmin logo appears. Continue to press on the upper left-hand corner of the screen until you see the calibration screen.

Once completed the Nuvi will display Calibration Complete

This will recalibrate your touchscreen to the LCD display.

If this doesn't resolves your problem. then your touchscreen may be defective.

Please see this page for additional information:

http://www.sharc.net/gps_LCD_repair.htm

Finally, if you are successful in recalibrating your touchscreen, go back and restore the file "GUPDATE.OLD" back to "GUPDATE.GCD", as this file may be helpful in the future, should your Nuvi's system software become corrupted or missing.

If the screen is miscalibrated, the position of "left" or "right" is relative.

I get through the dot series and it says calibration complete I hit OK and get windmill picture on screen with copyright info Nuvi 350 all rights reserved. then nothing it stays on that screen in spite of touching frozen. this is after I hit reset on back which is supposed to be the answer to all questions I read on site. but iI get a repeat of all of above and no GPS.

Thanks sharcnet!!! Just got my 260w returned after the battery recall. It didn't work!...wasn't able to select any letters on the top row of the keyboard. Tried your calibration technique method #2 and it now works like a champ!
Thanks!
Phil

Glad to hear it Phil. That's scary to hear about your unit coming back like that from the factory. Did they send you back your own unit or a refurbished one?

I do the dot sequence for my garmin 1390t, and it seems like it is never ending. I've been touching the same 6 dots over and over again for about 10 min straight; is this normal?

No it is not normal. Touchscreen calibration will only require 6 dots/presses. If it is taking more than that and you don't get the calibration ok notice, then the touchscreen is defective. There are screen size limits/default values already stored in the memory from the factory. When you attempt to recalibrate the screen, the new values are compared to the defaults already stored in memory. If they are way off in value from the stored defaults, you won't be able to recalibrate the screen and you may be stuck in the recalibration loop.

If you take a good unit that is properly calibrated and try to recalibrate by pressing an area not under the dot, the unit will do the same thing and keep you in the calibration loop.

First time had to recalibrate my 255w since I bought it back in '09.
Now that the screen is calibrated, works like new.
Thanks for the procedural guide!
