Two Questions: 1) My garmin antenna seems to work intermittently. I receive updating gps firmware and no signal. Other times, it'll work fine. I imagine that the antenna is going bad? However, why it works sometimes is beyond me. 2) I opened up the GPS and reseated the antenna and a little diode came out. Can anyone tell me what the red and black wires control. They were soldered to a small diode on my garmin 360 but came detached. I kept trying to fiddle with the antenna wire to see if I could get it to seat and maybe work better (as opposed to the above) In the process, those 2 wires disconnected. Its a little circular battery shaped object that had 2 red and black wires attached that fit into a hole near the LCD. Please tell me what this did. I am going to try and resolder them back on if it was anything major. My guess is that this was a firmware battery?? Justin |

When you see the "Updating GPS firmware" banner, this indicates that there is a communications issue between the main board and the GPS receiver chip on the flip up assembly. The main board can not communicate with the GPS receiver chip to obtain it's current firmware version, so it tries to reupload the GPS firmware that is stored on your Nuvi's directory. The GPS receiver assembly will need to be replaced in order to solve this problem. The cylindrical part with the red & black wires that you are referring to is the condenser microphone for bluetooth. If this is broke, you will no longer be able to make phone calls via bluetooth using your Nuvi. The firmware is stored in non-volatile RAM and does require a battery back-up. We always suggest that you never attempt to take apart your GPS as it's very easy to break something else. Always have a professional take a look at it. |
